Celestron PowerSeeker 80EQ Telescope is a decent beginner's telescope as it has a German equatorial mount for some smooth tracking of heavenly objects, once you magnify a celestial object you will see that without an equatorial mount it becomes difficult to keep the object in focus if you do not have finer movement of the axes. The telescope does a fairly good job in tracking the objects in sky.

Having said that the telescope is better than a toy which one gets in a departmental store it stands true, Do not expect to see spectacular views that one gets via media and news, those pictures were taken using very high resolution telescopes or may be hubble telescope which we are so much accustomed to.

PROS:

(+) German Equatorial mount provides decent tracking of objects in sky

(+) Tripod mount is not too bad for the price range.

(+) Decent optics, only one useable Eye piece (20mm)

(+) Uses Standard eyepieces (1.25 inch)

(+) Digital Camera Attachment is possible for astrophotography if you buy the right accessories matching your Digital camera.

CONS:

(-) Does not magnify enough for you to see spectacular details one wishes for.

(-) Other than one eyepiece (20mm) all other eyepieces' are not useable making it difficult to use them in the telescope for better view of the celestial objects.

(-) When the Tripod is extended all the way out, it shakes and makes it unusable.

Having said, this is a decent Telescope for watching at the moon, but I could not see any better than what is visible to naked eye when it comes to other planets, I am not sure why the magnification is not good enough to see more details when it comes to planets.

If you can find this telescope for less than $80 dollars it is well worth it for occasional sky watching, never for any serious astronomy or astrophotography use.

A piece of real crap. Never even think of buying this.

After lot of difficulties, I could finally point it to the moon. I only saw white light through its eye-piece as much as I can see with my naked eyes!!! The eye piece is so small, it seems as if I poked a hole on a piece of paper and watched a portion of the moon through the paper. And I paid so much money to see that crap?

Then I focussed on a distant star. It just appeared as it would appear through a 4x cheap binocular.

Believe me, don't buy a telescope if you live in a city and have enough "noise" from other light sources. If you live in a country side, you'd better buy a better telescope and not this crap.

I finally sold it on ebay and bought a good pair of Nikon binocular. The moon looks awesome through the Nikon binoculars. Read my other review on Nikon binoculars.

This is for a spotting scope, but as I suspected the screw threads are the same as most SLR cameras such as the Nikon D series 40 50 60 70 80 90 and Canons. This is great for nature photos because it has the micro adjustment knobs. Just set it down, tighten the height to mid and do your fine height and side to side with the rotation knobs. Pick it up, collapse the legs and it is light enough to walk around on the camera.

First, I have to deal with some nonsense from other reviews:

- this tripod is not all plastic. The legs and center column are aluminum and the mounting hardware is metal. It's a mostly metal tripod with some plastic fittings.

- it is explicitly designed for the C65 and C70 spotting scopes, both of which weigh 2lbs or less. One reviewer knocked it for not supporting his C90, which weighs _more than twice as much_. This is like being disappointed when an Indy car goes faster than your sedan.

I have used this tripod for astronomical viewing with my C70. It vibrates when bumped, but the vibrations die out in 2-3 seconds, which is acceptable for an inexpensive tabletop tripod and better than some cheap full-size tripods I've used. Surprisingly, it is no less sturdy with the center column extended. The slo-mo controls actually work and with zero slop or backlash, which is almost unbelievable at this price point.

The tripod has elevation limits, which probably won't matter for photography or daytime spotting but might for stargazing. The limits are 45 degrees if the scope is mounted as typically shown, in which case the head bumps into the altitude control, or 60 degrees if you turn the scope around, in which case the head bumps into the center column. You can exceed these limits somewhat by moving one leg inward and tilting the tripod, although this makes the tripod less stable.

For travel this thing is crazy compact. I have flown with the C70, tripod, laptop, power cord, digital camera, and several paperbacks in a small carry-on backpack.

In conclusion, this is a great little tripod for the job it was designed to do--holding spotting scopes, binoculars, and cameras that weigh less than 2lbs. If your gear weighs more, or if you can't be bothered to weigh it, find something else. As for me, I'm going to buy a second one just to use with my digital camera; it's far and away the best tabletop tripod I've found so far.

Nice finish, a very good adjust system, you can move it just millimeters easy to handle, very efficient for spotting, good quality. NO complains!

If you have a small camera, this one is adequate. The all-plastic design makes it difficult to adjust the height and the tilt because plastic tends to stick together when tightened. Loosening the knobs is a big pain and the legs tend to "give" a little bit when you use it with a bigger camera.

This tripod is made almost entirely of plastic (except for the legs and a few other parts). I would not mind that so much as long as its price was below $10. It is a simple product.

The Celestron has a very solid well built feel to it. My son and I have been enjoying viewing everything we can find, from hair to bugs. The product arrived in perfect condition and before Christmas as promised.

For Christmas, I bought each pair of grandchildren a 44202 and a 44204. One of the 202's had an inoperative light switch. The replacement process was well handled although I had the hassle of returning (cost prepaid)the original to a UPS house. One of the 204's had a broken mirror which my daughter was going to handle directly through Celestron since they live on the other side of the country from me.

While I'm satisfied with the products, the customer deserves better.

I just received my 44202 stereo microscope. It's just amazing. You can use it from the very first minute. If you want you can see one of the prepared slides right out the box, or any of the familiar objects at home, and you will discover a fascinating new world, hidden from your eyes.

My kids and I have used it to see a lot of bugs, spiders, flies, flowers, etc. The x20 factor is the best for 3-D viewing, while the x40 factor is best suited for flat, smaller objects like slides, stamps or similar.

The controls operate very well and allow an excellent level of command.

I have found that this microscope is solid, stable and easy to set-up.

I am very pleased to recommend this microscope.

Having shopped around, a lot, and keeping it below $$$, this is a great telescope. The red diode star finder makes zero-ing in on objects a snap! Really! What a neet invention. This telescope is too easy to set up. And the computer control works great too. For the $$$, this IS a very nice product. My ONLY suggestion is to also order a stronger eyepiece than what comes with it. The two that come with this scope dont do it justice. Mars looks great, and with a stronger eyepiece, you can see the dark bloches/spots on Mars. It wont be like the big close-ups from the hubble, but you'll enjoy what you see. And the moon is so clear and close up, you will feel like you can take a walk on it. The tripod is ok, a little flimsy but does its job. A happy purchase...

Bought this as a gift for hubby. We live with 360 degree view from Sierras to Sacto/Mt. Diablo, etc. but found this too much to figure out. Spent hours with little books that glow to find constellations...much easier than waiting for Celestron 80 to "skew" and then haven't a clue where it is or what it's doing. Mom bought it so will spend precious hours doing a techno. but feels overwhelmed. Suggestions? Classes at JC?

I'm a novice as far as telescopes goes. Actually this is my first one. Getting it to work won't take more than 5 minutes (including the unpacking) Assembling it is very straightforward.For terrestial objects I am very happy with it. I was able to see crisp images of objects more than 20 miles away. The hand control is also easy to use. It is a battery eater. And be careful, if you leave the battery pack connected, the next day you will realize they are gone.As far as magnification, I feel a little bit dissapointed. I was able to see Jupiter and 4 of it's moons, also Saturn is visible along it's rings. However the image is so small you'll get a headache after a couple of minutes due to the strain on your eyes. The moon looks great. I was also able to see what I presume was a satellite. It was like a very small lighted dot blinking and moving very fast on the sky for 1 or 2 minutes.Overall it is a good telescope, but if you are a first timer, don't expect to see the planets as big balloons with all kinds of patterns.

I've wanted a telescope for years, and finally decided to get one this Christmas. I bought the Celestron Nexstar 80 based on what I deemed as a good compromise between optical capabilities and ease of use. For the most part, I'm very happy with the purchase.Setup could not be easier. I was ready to rumble in minutes. Being a pure beginner, I needed the GOTO functions to help get me started. Within five minutes of bringing the scope outside, I was checking out Saturn's rings and scoping out Jupiter. I even managed to find the Orion Nebula. And I had no idea how to find these things without the scope's help. Now, after only a few days, I can find them on my own - which saves lots of battery life.There are some annoying design problems. As many other reviews have noted, the battery pack is a pain. The connection to the scope slides out far too easily, dumping alignment. Also, the wiring on the battery pack itself is fairly fragile. As soon as you break the scope out of the box, you should Velcro or tape the battery pack to the motorized mount (not the tripod legs). This will save you some disappointment.I was also disappointed in the readability of the hand controller. As the text scrolls by, it's very difficult to read. Don't fret too much about this, though. After you align it once or twice - you won't need to read the display that often, anyway.Lastly, while I have found the optics very good, I would recommend purchasing a 6mm and/or 4mm eyepiece right off the bat when you order your scope. The 25mm and 10mm eyepieces that come with the kit are great, but you're going to want more magnification the first time you look at Jupiter, Saturn, etc. And while you're buying an additional eyepiece, grab a moon filter and a solar filter as well. My daughter loves looking at the moon with the telescope, but it's so bright that it destroys your night vision for ten minutes without the filter.Overall, I'm very happy with the telescope. I have really enjoyed it, and look forward to exploring the night sky for years to come. Who knows, maybe this is the first of more telescopes in my future.

I ordered the Nexstar 80GT from Amazon and it arrived exactly when promised. I opened the box with child-like excitement. Inside was a high quality, good looking telescope. It was incredibly easy to set up. There are only a few easy steps needed to assemble this telescope. Pop in 8 AA batteries and you are on your way. There are a few methods you can use to align the telescope. I found the two star alignment to work best for me. Once aligned you can choose a "tour" that will show you an incredible list of objects to view. Select one, press one button and the telescope comes alive, moving automatically to the chosen object. Some objects are very easy to see and some need tweaking with different magnifications. The clarity of the optics is impressive and you will gasp at some of the views of the planets and open clusters. Even the Orion Nebula is easily visible with this scope. This is a wonderful starter scope. If you want to have fun and explore the sky purchase this scope, you will not be dissapointed. For the amateur astronomer who just wants to check out what is out there from time to time, this is a great scope to do it with.Two minor problems surfaced so far. A little more design effort by Celestron would have made this a five star rating.1) The power cable has a tendancy to slip out from its connection. This causes the scope to lose power, which in turn requires you to realign the scope. You can easily fix this by using some velcro tape.2) The battery pack is located on the accessory tray. As the telescope turns, the cable can, and will get tangled if you don't keep a close eye on it.Good luck with your purchase! Clear skies.

This little scope is so cute, you will just "fall in love" with it! It arrived in just two days from the warehouse, and last night I tested it out on the moon. The views of the crators on the moon were excellent and very bright, with no unwanted "red or blue light fringes" appearing around the edge - (as is sometimes seen in refractors). Of course the image it gives does not match what I have seen with my 6-inch f8 reflector, but that can be expected.WARNING, you will "get hooked" on this little refractor with its wide field of view! Also, they finally made a finder scope that is easy to use - and the "red dot" invention is fantastic! I am able to line it up to a distant object and keep my glasses on!I recommend the use of a 17 mm eyepiece which gives about 23 power. With the use of an erecting image diagonal mirror, this scope may be used as an excellent spoting scope. (Otherwise, with the star diagonal, the image is upright, but a sign will appear to read backwards. The reason for the use of the star diagonal is to give brighter images when observing at night).The alignment feature may be "by-passed" and the hand control can still me used manually - (I was glad for that!) In the next couple of months (weather permiting) I hope to learn how to align it to the stars, and use the GOTO feature!The Celestron CD rom (that comes with this telescope) called "The Sky" is fantastic! It is like having a small planetarium on your PC! You can "see" how the stars rise in the east, and then see them again setting in the west!

The only reason this product does not get five stars is due to the fact that it is still a "beginner" model and the customer should not expect to see crisp detail in far away novas or brilliant color in the gas bands of the Gas Giants. HOWEVER, for... this telescope is one of the best bargains currently on the market. For one, it bears the top name in the business: Celestron. This is not you Home Shopping Network bargain basement model. Secondly, it come equipped with a computerized database of pre-set star coordinates that (once aligned) the telescope can point itself to with the push of a button. Finally, although (as previously stated) you won't get to see images that look like pages out of Astronomy Magazine, you will clearly see at least 4 of Jupiters moons, the rings of Saturn, the Orion Nebula, and a host of other objects that the average stargazer misses out on. On top of all of this, this telescope is mind-boggling easy to assemble. If it takes you more than 5 minutes out of the box to have it up and running, then you should probably consider a tutor of some sort. All in all, the 80 GT is a spectacular buy.

I just got this scope and its wonderfull. I didn't think the telesope would be very accurate, boy was I wrong. Out of 35 objects I asked it to "go to", it missed only one. And that one was just outsid the field of view. Even though its 3.1 inches, many objects appeard bright and detailed. It also tracked the objects perfectly. This is a very good scope. Anyone who has an interest in astronomy should get this scope. Its well worth the money.

Very nice telescope
Having shopped around, a lot, and keeping it below $$$, this is a great telescope. The red diode star finder makes zero-ing in on objects a snap! Really! What a neet invention. This telescope is too easy to set up. And the computer control works great too. For the $$$, this IS a very nice product. My ONLY suggestion is to also order a stronger eyepiece than what comes with it. The two that come with this scope dont do it justice. Mars looks great, and with a stronger eyepiece, you can see the dark bloches/spots on Mars. It wont be like the big close-ups from the hubble, but you'll enjoy what you see. And the moon is so clear and close up, you will feel like you can take a walk on it. The tripod is ok, a little flimsy but does its job. A happy purchase...

Wow! Too much telescope for beginners
Bought this as a gift for hubby. We live with 360 degree view from Sierras to Sacto/Mt. Diablo, etc. but found this too much to figure out. Spent hours with little books that glow to find constellations...much easier than waiting for Celestron 80 to "skew" and then haven't a clue where it is or what it's doing. Mom bought it so will spend precious hours doing a techno. but feels overwhelmed. Suggestions? Classes at JC?

Sharp images, poor magnification
I'm a novice as far as telescopes goes. Actually this is my first one. Getting it to work won't take more than 5 minutes (including the unpacking) Assembling it is very straightforward.

For terrestial objects I am very happy with it. I was able to see crisp images of objects more than 20 miles away.

The hand control is also easy to use. It is a battery eater. And be careful, if you leave the battery pack connected, the next day you will realize they are gone.

As far as magnification, I feel a little bit dissapointed. I was able to see Jupiter and 4 of it's moons, also Saturn is visible along it's rings. However the image is so small you'll get a headache after a couple of minutes due to the strain on your eyes. The moon looks great. I was also able to see what I presume was a satellite. It was like a very small lighted dot blinking and moving very fast on the sky for 1 or 2 minutes.

Overall it is a good telescope, but if you are a first timer, don't expect to see the planets as big balloons with all kinds of patterns.

Best telescope
This is my very first telescope and to tell you the truth I know nothing about Astronomy and bought this on a whim to *look at pretty things in the sky*. Just Kidding. But this telescope is quite powerful and the remote control is absolutely wonderful. THe instruction manuel was easy to follow and the actual set up took no time at all even for a noob. I defintely recommend this.

Great performer vs cheap dept. store units !
Agree with other positive posts. Compared to those dept. store units this is a no brainer purchase ! You also get additional eyepieces and these are the 1.4" not the .96" size that the cheap units include.
You can also get the optional pc patch cord and run the scope from your laptop ! Buy 16 nimh aa rechargeable batteries and you'll never run low on battery power for your scope.

Lotsa power for little money
I have always wanted a telescope and when Mars was beginning to approach it's closest distance to earth in 2200+ years, I didn't want to wait 2 more millennia to get one. Amazon delivered the scope just in time for me to view The Red Planet at its closest distance in history.

I must say that the viewing was anti-climactic... but not due to the telescope's failings. At its closest, Mars looked like an orange dot with a white dot near the polar cap - fairly flat in appearance. About a week later, when Mars was still relatively close, I went to a public viewing at the Observatory at UNT in Denton, TX. I got to look through a telescope that was so large, it could use this Celestron as a q-tip. :-)

It was then that I realized how good m Celestron was - because the viewing at the observatory looked the same as it did with my new, inexpensive telescope!

Wee!

The moon is absolutely breath-taking, especially with the included moon filter that helps the craters to "pop" with clarity.

My less than perfect rating is due to the fact that the included software is for Windows-only. This is frankly inexcusable. There is no reason that the same software could not be made for the Mac platform, especially since Mac OS 10.x is Linux based.

Also annoying is the lack of a built-in compass and bubble level. I bought a compass and lined my scope due north and bought a carpenter's level to make sure it was level. I then punched in the date, time and time zone and gave the command for the telescope to auto-calibrate. The motor impressively hummed as the scope automatically turned to find Polaris... but couldn't find it. Then it tried to find another star, and couldn't find that, either.

The instructions read like you have just completed a college-level astronomy course (which I have not), so the neophyte will be confused by many of the instructions.

With the help of some online web sites, I got some helpful hints that made the use of the scope to be easier.

I know that the stars are millions of miles away, but they really don't look any different through the telescope than they do with the naked eye.

I wish there was an angle viewer for the laser alignment scope... when you're looking at objects that are right above you, you've got to get into a yoga position to line up the spot scope.

The tripod folds up easily, as long as you don't attach the storage triangle below the scope.

The battery pack design is totally bizarre. If you want to easily transport the tripod from location to location and opt not to install the storage triangle, there is no where to put the battery pack unless you precariously hang it on the top of one of the tripod legs - and it's way too easy for the cords to get tangled up as you move the telescope from object to object in the night sky.

The clip that holds the hand controller is also less than impressive. Any jarring of the tripod and the controller goes flying. The phone-jack like connectors should have had swivels installed so that when you turn the scope the controller doesn't get tangled with the power cord to the battery pack.

Also annoying is the fact that the AC adapter is not included, so you have to keep fresh batteries on hand.

The spotting scope has a cool laser-like light to help you spot an obect easily before zooming in w/ the compounded lenses - but the battery that operates that scope is not changeable - when it dies (estimated time is 10 years), it's dead and all you can do is either live without it or buy a new telescope.

For someone who is totally clueless like me, but still wants to view the night sky, this is a very affordable way to get into a rewarding hobby. Obviously, though, you get what you pay for and the serious astronomer should get the most power they can afford to reap the biggest rewards.

The Nexstar 8 SE upholds Celestron's reputation for quality optics. When I use an 11mm Plossl eyepiece (almost 200x magnification) for example, I can easily see the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings. When I look at Jupiter, the pale orange color of Jupiter's famous Great Red Spot is visible, and I've even been able to identify the polar caps and spot dust storms on the planet Mars. A 20mm Plossl eyepiece (about 100x magnification) is a good choice for viewing galaxies and star clusters. When I look at globular cluster M13 in the constellation Hercules the high contrast XLT optics show me a glowing snowflake made of hundreds of tiny pin-point stars! And a low power 32mm Plossl eyepiece is a good choice for views of larger deep space highlights like the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula.

Celestron's patented "SkyAlign" system makes the Nexstar 8 SE very easy to use. I just pick the nearest town from the built-in list, enter the date and time, and point the telescope at three bright stars. I don't need a star chart because "SkyAlign" identifies the stars for me. When I just want a quick look at the moon or a planet, I like to use the "Solar System Align" option. After entering the date and time, I just point the telescope at the moon and press the "Align" key. That's all it takes, the computer takes over and the telescope begins tracking quietly and accurately. At star parties I often have my Nexstar up and running while older computerized telescopes are still waiting for their alignment stars to appear in the twilight.

To call any SCT a jack of all trades is accurate, but to end that thought by saying that it is a master of none does not tell the whole story. For one thing, they really are masters of planetary imaging. There are other areas too, such as DSO observing, where, inch for inch, an SCT is very close to some of its rivals. Still other areas, such as wide field observing or focusing, which are commonly considered an SCTs weak points, are to a large degree corrected by the addition of third party fixes. A good 2" inch diagonal and a Feathertouch focuser make the C9.25 a true pleasure to use. In short, I don't see how anyone could be displeased with this telescope, even first-time scope buyers like myself. You may eventually want to add a refractor to the lineup, but I'll bet you keep the C9.25.

The 9.25 inch has many advantages which I will try to describe below.

1. It is probably the largest really portable telescope for a one person setup. Most scopes ten inches or more in diameter are not as easy to transport and set up.
2. The scope has plenty of back focus. There has been enough for any attachment I have
ever used including many different cameras, spectroscopes, flip mirror boxes, and even tunable wavelength filters.
3. With proper collimation the optics provide diffraction limited crisp views of the moon and planets.
4. Images have slightly better contrast than many other Schmidt Cassegrain telescopes.
5. The mirror is large enough to allow serious deep sky photography.
6. The OTA is easily balanced on a mount.
7. The OTA doesn't shake or vibrate much in a breeze.
8. The OTA backplate accepts an almost endless variety of accessories.
9. The OTA is very affordable when compared with other similar telescopes.
10. There was almost no waiting time between ordering the OTA and receiving it.
11. The scope is easily collimated by adding Bob's "Knobs" or similar screws and it holds collimation well.

There are also a few disadvantages:

1. Dew collects on the corrector plate with ease and needs to be prevented from collecting
or removed.
2. There is a lot of mirror shift when focusing which is an annoyance for solar system
photography.
3. The focusing knob is rather coarse and fine focusing adjustments are tricky.
4. The finderscope is barely adequate and is difficult to adjust.

Conclusions:
This is a very capable and affordable telescope that is suitable for both deep sky and solar system photography and visual work. It is light for its size and is easily transported and set up by one person. The aperature is about the right size to achieve the maximum possible resolution allowed by the atmosphere on the great majority of New England nights. When properly collimated it provides diffraction limited views and it provides good contrast between the subject and background sky. It accepts an incredibly large variety of attachments and has plenty of back focus. Minor annoyances include its tendency to accumulate dew on the corrector plate, some difficulty in fine focusing, mirror shift, and a barely adequate finderscope. Cooldown time is acceptable but could be improved.

Based on Astronomy magazine's telescope "report cards," this telescope is best used for...
Lunar Observation: Very Good.
Planetary Observation: Very Good.
Binary/Star Cluster Observation: Very Good.
Galaxy/Nebula Observation: Very Good.
Photography Possible.

This relatively high power eyepiece arrived as advertised, well packaged, and delivers the sharp close planetary images I was hoping for.

Great Bang for Your Buck
I have a number of the X-Cell eyepieces and these seem to be the best bang for your buck. They aren't Naglers, but they don't cost anywhere near what a Nagler does either. They could have a little better contrast, but the Expance eye pieces that have better contrast have a lot more comma. For eye reliefe these are a blessing. With the shape of the eyeguards keep light off the observation lens these are great at star parties, or any where, where stary light may interfear with your observing. The long eye reliefe lets you observe with your glasses on. On the down side, they only give you a 55' view vs a Naglers 82' view, like I said before they could have a little better contrast, and they could have less comma, but for under $100 not much else comes close to the performance of these eyepieces. One other thing, if your eye isn't lined up just right these eyepieces will black out. But it is easy to get used to placing your eye right and you won't even think about it after you use them awhile. In fact I think the next step up in eyepieces would be the Baader Hyperions at, at least $120 each. Now if they would just offer these in a complete set with the matching Barlow in a nice case, they would have the best set available as a package deal at the best price out there. Helps reduce the dew and stray light
I bought this when I bought the telescope to help with the dew and stray light for a CPC1100. In Austin Texas, the dew has been a problem and I have also needed a dew heater.

The fact the lens shade folds up is nice for storage. Sometimes the shade is a little tricky to attach.

I ended up buying a custom aluminum dew shield since it is a little more convenient to install and the aluminum shield has a cap useful for preventing dew when you want to leave the scope out (setup at night and observe in the morning).

After receiving this scope .I read the instructions and understood them. The goto feature is not difficult to figure out.So I had no problems there. I have never been able to see any neb. or gal. Nothing but the usual boring venus and jupiter. The moon of course. This scope although expensive is no better than my dept. store telescope. What good is goto when you getthere there is nothing to see. Star test was excellent so it doesnt need collimation. DO NOT BUY ANY SCOPE WITH LESS THAN 8inches of apeture. And you can take that to the bank!!!

What I see through this scope
I originally ordered the Nexstar 80 GT because I wanted to see the bands of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn during winter of 2001-2 while those planets were high and bright. Before it shipped, an astronomer friend suggested that I save [price] on a 5" or 8" scope by not buying that one. So I bought the Nexstar 5 instead. Overall, I am very happy with it, but now I wish that I had saved [price] on an 8" or 10" scope by not buying the 5".
With the Nexstar 5 and [price] worth of accessory filters and lenses, I see clearly five or six bands of Jupiter, I watch the four largest moons change positions as they orbit, but cannot see the moons' shadows on the face of the planet. On a clear, still night I can just distinguish the red spot. Saturn is beautiful, but I cannot make out separate rings, they blur into one. I see the Great Andromeda Nebula as an indistinct splotch of light. My favorite targets are, by far, the sun and moon. With proper filters (mandatory for solar observing) I can see sunspots, but solar flares require another very expensive filter. The moon is spectacular through this scope; I can easily see many interesting features of craters and mare. These are just my observations and not meant to criticize the scope - it does exactly what it is capable of doing.
While it does seem logical to spend your money on optics, until you become an expert skywatcher, the Nexstar goto and tracking features are a must. The sun, moon, and planets move so quickly across the sky that without some type of tracking system they quickly exit the field of view. Without the goto features it would be impossible for moderately experienced observers to point the scope at, say the Christmas Tree Nebula (never mind whether you can actually see anything once it gets there). The Nexstar does indeed have an internal database of 18,000 objects and 17,995 of them are either invisible or nondescript points of light - but that does not mean that they are not worth pointing the scope at.
Astronomy is an expensive addiction. Even those who use the Hubble space telescope would prefer a bigger and better scope. So in summary, buy this scope if it is what you can afford, otherwise do your homework and then buy a more expensive one.

Compact and easy to use.
Small enough to throw in the trunk of your car, sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of stumbling around the backyard in the dark, the Nexstar 5 offers fine viewing and ease of use for any beginner that does not have the time or the attention span to learn the locations of many celestial objects.

Very Good Refractor For The Money
This telescope allowed me to look at Venus that enlarged it to the size of the moon with an 11mm 82 degree Orion eyepiece! I'm sorry that the other reviewers didn't find this telecope amazing, but I did. Maybe they are more experienced than me, but I feel I made the right decision buying this telescope. This is my second telescope I have owned. My first one was a cheap Konus, that got me started. I tried to do my homework before buying this telescope. Here are the features I think I paid this kind of money for: 1) Wide field of view. Because the scope is short tubed, it sees a wider field of view than a longer tube refractor. 2) Huge 102mm lens. I would like to someday own the Celestron 150mm longer tube refractor, but it would serve a different purpose. 3) GOTO computer. It still requires effort on my part, but it sure is a cool feature. I don't expect it to work like a government or NASA product, it is a home telescope, and it is as good as it gets. Buy it without regret and unlock the views of the solar system.

Great scope for the money
The Celestron Nexstar 102 SLT is a nice scope for the money. The mount is stable and well damped, and the finder scope works very well. I have no problems at all aiming the scope manually at the stars or planets I want to look at. The battery life is very good as well. I've accidently left the red-dot on, not finding it on until the next day and it is still going strong. A very easy scope to use, though I would recommend an additional 3 or 4mm eyepiece and a moon filter to really enjoy the scope to a greater degree. Then of course the computerized "Go To" capabilities of the scope increases the fun by a tremendous amount. It works very well once the scope is aligned and aligning is a snap. A lot of fun. Highly recommended!

This interface cable was essential for updating the software on the hand control and scope motor. Required the purchase of an after market cable to connect the RS-232 cable to hand control base outlet(no need to connect to the outlet on the scope base with the SE).

Exactly as stated. Most all laptops will need a USB/RS-232 adapter, and driver in order to use this.

Will probably require some computer knowledge.

I cannot understand why the telescope manufacturing companies seem to stay about 10 years behind the current technology?

Works perfectly
My laptop doesn't have an RS-232 port (as usual) so I had buy a USB to RS232 converter (on ebay). After installing the proper ASCOM driver, my Celestron NexStar 114 can nicely be controlled from SkyMap. Just click on a star on the chart and the telescope slews there. Position/time synchronization is also really easy.
NOTE: Before you buy this item, do find out what an RS-232 port is, and if your computer doesn't have one, buy an adapter first.

No Sample Galleries for this product!!
I searched and searched for sample images which would represent what this product is capable of, and I found only some poor quality images buried in some site I've already forgotten. The Celestron home page did not offer samples of images from this device. In contrast, a search for images from the Dino-Lite yielded many quality images. Therefore, I plan to spend the extra $40 for the basic Dino-Lite (129.00 for the am211 if you know where to look).

GREAT LITTLE TOOL
The Celestron microscope is a great little tool, usually I have to go into the clean room to view a package under one of our optical microscopes, now I can do it at my desk. It's well worth the small cost!.

Doesn't work with Vista 64 bit
The driver won't work with windows Vista 64 bit system. I found this out after talking to multiple support people and submitting requests on the internet. I never recieved any response, I always had to spend 20 minutes on hold to talk to someone.

Camera feels cheap and I imagine it would be difficult to push "click" button without shaking the camera.
Since I was never able to use it, I can't say if the quality is good or bad.
I have used Dino-lite scopes before and I was impressed with them, that is what I am going to buy right now.

I was impressed with Amazon's return procedure, if you buy one it will be easy to return.

Great eyepiece for the money!!
The eyepiece works great. The price was also a lot cheaper than anywhere else I looked, and I looked for a few days. If you buy this eyepiece I hope that you have a equatorial mount as well. This eyepiece gets you so close to the objects your looking at that they are not in view for very long. It also helps to use another eyepiece such as a 10mm or higher to find the object and then swap it with this one. I have not been able to look at Saturn or Jupiter yet as they are not out. But looking forward to it.

Great product, faulty product description
T-adapters can turn your telescope into an amazing telephoto lens and this one will work with any that have a 1.25" visual back. This piece has a 1.25" inserting slip connector which replaces the Star Diagonal on your telescope and the title given by Celestron is entirely misleading, it refers to a generic measurement of an inch (actually 1.25"). The faulty description continues in the product description: it WILL NOT FIT .96" visual backed telescopes such as the Celestron C90, or the Nexstar 4GT. In that case you'll need this part Celestron 93635-A T-Adapter for NexStar 4GT Those telescopes have a .96" visual back and the T-adapter has a female ring which screws over the visual back.

In either case you still need a T-Ring to connect to your camera, be careful there too as there are now ones for 58mm digital cameras that are larger than the older 35mm.

Getting Amazon to change these descriptions is difficult so hopefully this review can correct it.

Universal T-Adapter
I bought this for use with my Celestron 130 SLT telescope, but did not consider that my camara is a Kodak P-850 Digital SLR, which requires a 52mm barrel adapter, as well as a 52mm T-adapter!

My own fault, due to my ignorance.

But, I have ordered the required adapters and will post back later, after I get a chance to try everything out. Product is solid, and as described.

Works with telescope adjustment
This product screws into the T-ring and hooks to my Canon Rebel-XTI as expected. The product attaches to my telescope as expected. Unforunately, I could not focus as is. The telescope required adjusting the mirror position to perfect the focus. So I learned something. Connected to a Tasco Luminova telescope.

Doesn't work
There were three problems with this item:

1) It rattled. I'm no optics engineer, but I'm fairly certain optics are not suppose to rattle.

2) It doesn't work -- everything is blurry and smeared.

3) There are no instructions or even a description of what it should or shouldn't do, such as rattle.

Other than that it's a lovely black tube. Very black and tuby.

Having read a helpful review here that contains the instructions this item should have come with I will give it another shot. So far it's useless and worthless.

There are problems with this reducer
I purchased the Celestron NexImage Reducer from Amazon along with the NexImage CCD camera and just received them. The camera is great but there are issues with the reducer. First, it comes with NO instructions of any kind. I spent a few hours researching online to figure out the many caveats for this item's use. Second, I was disappointed with the item's quality. It has a light, plastic feel and the threads are poorly machined. Many people have had issues with cross-threading, but so far I've been lucky. Also, the threads are not standard gauge. The Reducer can only be threaded onto the NexImage camera and nothing else. Third, the lense in the Reducer was held in place by a small metal bezel ring that was loose and allowed the lense to rattle in its seat. I finally tightened it down, which stopped the rattling. Fourth, even when used correctly, this lense reduced the clarity of images. I suspect that the optics are poor or badly aligned.

If there were instructions, they should state the following important points: The reducer needs to be screwed directly into the body of the NexImage camera after removing the short barrel that comes with the NexImage. It should not be screwed onto the end of the NexImage camera barrel. Once attached, the Reducer should not be inserted all the way into your reflector telescope's eyepiece receiver. You should only insert the first 1/2 inch or so, then tighten it in place. If you insert it all the way, you will not be able to achieve focus. The Reducer (and the camera for that matter) cannot be used with eyepieces. The camera is equivalent to a 5mm fixed eyepiece. The reducer is used to enlarge the field of view (i.e. to reduce the magnification). Without the reducer, the moon completely fills the field of view several times over. With the reducer, you see about 1/2 of the moon in your field of view. To get a full disk view of the moon, you'd need to get a different reducer lense. You will not want to use the Reducer lense for planetary imaging, only for lunar, solar or star field imaging. When imaging planets, you do not want to reduce magnification for a wider view. You want to do quite the opposite, so this lense is has limited applications.

All in all, I was a a bit disappointed with this purchase, but for the money ($19) I guess I can't complain too much.

Useful for lunar imaging
I bought this so that I could get more of the moon into view with the Celestron NexImage camera.

The Bad:
Quality control is pretty poor on this item. The threads aren't very precise or cross-threaded (perhaps the Neximage) so I couldn't tighten down the lense to the bottom of the Neximage. I also see something hanging from the side of one of the internal elements in a manner that partially overlaps the lens element.

The Good:
This thing is dirt cheap at $24.

Celestron OIII Filter
Not a bad filter. you'll need it to see some nebula, but just be sure you use it on some of your lower power EPs. On a bright nebula, like the ring, the background will be completely black whith almost no stars, while the ring itself doesn't appear to be any dimmer(it does turn blue in color). At ~80x (under slightly light poluted skies) with my 8" sct the helix nebula is visible, but just barely...enough to know it's there but not really see anything. Without it, the helix isn't visible at all. I've used a 2" version on an Ep that yields around 45x, and under good conditions the view of the helix is stunning. Be aware, it does dim the background stars substantially. You need to know you are pointed in the right area before putting it on.
Judging by the looks and the description, I'd say this it basically the same thing as the Baader planetarium version with a celestron label slapped on it.
If you don't mind the cool aquamarine blue color, it makes a pretty good filter for dimming down a bright moon for a little lunar observation as well. and you can stack it with other filters to further enhance the view.

Great for viewing nebula
This filter works great for bringing out contrast in the Orion nebula.

Vibration Suppression
I was a bit sceptical about the claims for this product but it really does work. It has virtually eliminated vibration that used to occur every time I touched the scope, e.g. to track an object or focus. Well worth the minor investment.

Hard to tell if this helps stabilize the scope
I bought this to reduce vibration on a Celestron CPC1100. It does seem to help some but not as noticeable as you would think. It does help getting the scope level since the pads have a wider base than the tripod legs when placed on soft ground.

I sometimes will leave them out when I take the telescope inside so that I can repeat my viewing at the same location the following night (lots of trees in my backyard).

Good Eyepiece, but can't use filters
Close inspection of the threads on the eyepiece revealed no damage, however non of my filters (orion, baader) will screw on to the threads. I own a number of other Celestron eyepieces, and all of my filters fit them just fine.
The eyepiece itself is very nice. Wide fov, and good eye relief. Just forget about using a filter with it.

A Pretty Good Starter Scope
This is a fair minimum starter scope. It has a 90 mm front objective, (3.5") which is larger than the standard 60 mm lens. This scope collects much more light meaning images will be sharper and brighter. It will provide good views of the moon and fair views of the major planets, namely Jupiter and Saturn.

The mount will vibrate a bit, but this occurs in all starter scopes at this price. I like the slow motion controls to track objects as they slowly move across the sky.

There are two eyepieces, 45x and 90x, which are appropriate for this size scope. A barlow lens can be purchased separately for more magnification options.

All in all, a better than average starter scope for a kid. I don't recommend it for an adult, as it will quickly become outmoded in its simplicity and limitations.

great demo but ....
When reviewing the demo video, the features were great and what I wanted. The microscope lacked many features represented on the video. The customer care service by email and phone have been hard to reach and get a reply. When I returned it to celestron for replacement, I am still waiting after 3 weeks. I should have just returned the item the same day.

don't buy for opaque specimens
We bought this scope to test it out as a museum display for an opaque (solid metal) specimen. The design of the top light is poor -- the objective lenses cast a shadow on the specimen when the top light is used. Other reviews note that the top light isn't strong enough for opaque specimens anyway. I'd avoid this scope if that's what you need to look at.

For transparent slides, though, I expect it works great, and the video display is a very compelling feature.

The Microscope that thoguht it could.
You have to spend the big dollars to really see at a cellular level.
You can see blood cells and Bacteria though. Came with the gear rack broken, but I was able to take it apart and fix it.

Of questionable value....
I am an amateur astronomer with 40+ years of experience. I have this filter mounted on my 8" Celestron SCT (C8). This particular scope has excellent optics, is kept perfectly collimated, & should be able to view objects down to 15th magnitude. With the filter mounted, however, I can rarely make out objects of 12.5 magnitude, & usually have to strain to attain 12th magnitude objects, even with high surface brightness. Despite the 'fluff' in the advertising, I can detect no visual evidence of it "cutting atmospheric haze". Perhaps it does, 'technically', but the loss of light (attenuation) offsets more than what is gained by the filter, in my opinion. When going for the REALLY "dim fuzzies", I usually have to remove the filter - the difference in views is profound.

As far as acting as a dust filter, the benefits are minimal. The vacuum effect from changing eyepieces will deposit more dust & 'trash' on your diagonal's mirror than this filter will ever prevent from reaching your scope's primary mirror, which lives in a semi-sealed environment anyway (on an SCT). There IS the chance, as ads used to read (perhaps still do) of a stray moth getting inside....your odds of being struck by lightning are probably greater. Moths are drawn to light - telescopes are operated in as dark a condition as you can find!

It's your 'insurance money' to spend as you please, however, but you should be prepared for the loss of optical performance this filter introduces -- and there's no escaping that fact.

So, you might ask, with all this negativity why do I have the filter? Let's just say if I had it to buy again, knowing what I do now, I wouldn't. Lessons learnt the hard way. I'm the one advising you, remember?

Great eye relief for a 5mm lens
I am rating this lens five stars because it has great eye relief for a short lens along with a quality build and good images. I think one would be hard pressed to find a better lens any where near the price range of this one. Keep it up Celestron!

Does not seems to be what I've expected!!!
Nice looking, its heavy, but at a glance coatings look like not well distributed on lens surface. Images of venus and saturn very blur and hazy.
I tried this eyepiece in a well collimated reflector telescope (orion spaceprobe 130) in which other eyepieces work very well.

Not Good.

When I use an 11mm Plossl eyepiece (almost 200x magnification) for example, I can easily see the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings. When I look at Jupiter, the pale orange color of Jupiter's famous Great Red Spot is visible, and I've even been able to identify the polar caps and spot dust storms on the planet Mars. A 20mm Plossl eyepiece (about 100x magnification) is a good choice for viewing galaxies and star clusters. When I look at globular cluster M13 in the constellation Hercules the high contrast XLT optics show me a glowing snowflake made of hundreds of tiny pin-point stars! And a low power 32mm Plossl eyepiece is a good choice for views of larger deep space highlights like the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula.

Celestron's patented "SkyAlign" system makes the Nexstar 8 SE very easy to use. I just pick the nearest town from the built-in list, enter the date and time, and point the telescope at three bright stars. I don't need a star chart because "SkyAlign" identifies the stars for me. When I just want a quick look at the moon or a planet, I like to use the "Solar System Align" option. After entering the date and time, I just point the telescope at the moon and press the "Align" key. That's all it takes, the computer takes over and the telescope begins tracking quietly and accurately. At star parties I often have my Nexstar up and running while older computerized telescopes are still waiting for their alignment stars to appear in the twilight.

Review of Celestron IS 70 Vista Pix Imaging Spotting Scope
I like the VistaPix imaging spotting scope, but my short experience with it does suggest some improvements are needed: (1) As with many imaging systems, the digital camera is attached to the side and does not take advantage of the large direct-view lens itself. Also, (2) the lens is a fixed focus, not a variable telescopic lens. (3) When one has to focus the VistaPix, you focus looking at the digital display and a vertical bar on that display, trying to get a number and heighth of the vertical bar as large as possible. The numbering scheme on the vertical bar doesn't seem to make sense: sometimes the number is in the low 100s and sometimes it is in the high hundreds even when the vertical bar is tall. After you have gotten the highest number possible, the camera is supposed to be in focus. (4) Then you have to adjust the eyepiece to focus the direct-view optical lens. A little cumbersome. (5) After I took pictures I found that they were not in sharp focus when downloaded to the PC...close, but not sharp. And you only find out when you download them to your computer! Very frustrating. (6) The VistaPix also eats up batteries very quickly. The manual says that you can use an AC adapter and gives specifications in terms of voltage and amperage, (7) but do not specify a specific Celestron power supply nor does the VistaPix come with one. Frustrating. I have several power supplies from a wide variety of electronic gadgets, but none met the VistaPix power supply specifications. It does come in a metal carrying case (nice) and also with a remote shutter release (for steady shooting--nice). Comes with an SD memory card slot (buy a card, otherwise the internal memory only allows a few pics to be stored...and SD memory cards are cheap). I'm using the VistaPix for birdwatching. Overall, a little disappointed, primarily because of the difficulty in obtaining a sharp focus. Will keep playing with it, but I might recommend looking around before I buy a VistPix.

very disappointed in the high magnification pictures taken with this unit.
it is a hit and miss on the focus... mostly out of focus.... rarely get a
good in focus pic with high mag'tion. i always us a solid tripod when taking high mag pictures........ on the other side of the coin it takes
good in focus pictures on the low magnification lens........but of course i purchased the celestron for the high magnification lens.....
i would not recommend this unit to anyone.......

No problems at all, great product
I was hesitant to purchase the IS70 after reading other reviews, escpecially about the problems encountered with batteries and not being able to get the units to work at first.

Ours came in, worked as advertised from the moment we turned it on, and has been taking great pictures every since. We've now taken about 100 pictures, and are still on the second set of batteries.

Proper focus is difficult, and although the optical power is fantastic, the digital zoom gets fuzzy fast, both because of the math involved as well as any motion whatsoever.

We're very glad we purchased it.

Celestron has taken the typical Chinese laboratory prepared slides, corrected many of the spelling errors in the listing that comes with the box and packed the wooden box in a nice printed cardboard box. The selection is more interesting than the three other '100 slide' collections that we have, but the quality of the slides is the same. Only about forty of the slides are duplicates of our other sets, and ten of those are different enough to merit keeping both prepared specimens. I like the wooden box, and Celestron's slide labels are better than the other three sets because they have the slide numbers located at the very top of the label (some sets do not number the slides themselves).

Six of the slides are not what is listed in the printed list of contents; not a cause for complaint since no seller had a listing of the slides when we ordered them. Your purchase may have different substitutions. Many of the slides have spelling errors typical of a non-English speaking, non scientific person typing the labels for the slides from a handwritten or dictated list. Most of those errors are corrected in the list enclosed in the box but there are still several mistakes; for example the slide labeled "Eloden Stem" is corrected to read "Leiden Stem" in the listing, but appears to be an Elodea (waterweed) stem. One of our slides has a large piece of the corner broken off; it was not in the box. I haven't viewed all the slides, only the duplicates.

The following list has been corrected to the best of my ability, standardized according to our own method, and cross referenced to make it easier to find a particular slide. I am a novice so I may have introduced new mistakes. We have 450 slides combined and sorted alphabetically, with duplicates included when they show different features, so with one list we can find any slide we have.

This interface cable was essential for updating the software on the hand control and scope motor. Required the purchase of an after market cable to connect the RS-232 cable to hand control base outlet(no need to connect to the outlet on the scope base with the SE).

Works perfectly
My laptop doesn't have an RS-232 port (as usual) so I had buy a USB to RS232 converter (on ebay). After installing the proper ASCOM driver, my Celestron NexStar 114 can nicely be controlled from SkyMap. Just click on a star on the chart and the telescope slews there. Position/time synchronization is also really easy.
NOTE: Before you buy this item, do find out what an RS-232 port is, and if your computer doesn't have one, buy an adapter first.

Better than a Toy!
Celestron PowerSeeker 80EQ Telescope is a decent beginner's telescope as it has a German equatorial mount for some smooth tracking of heavenly objects, once you magnify a celestial object you will see that without an equatorial mount it becomes difficult to keep the object in focus if you do not have finer movement of the axes. The telescope does a fairly good job in tracking the objects in sky.

Having said that the telescope is better than a toy which one gets in a departmental store it stands true, Do not expect to see spectacular views that one gets via media and news, those pictures were taken using very high resolution telescopes or may be hubble telescope which we are so much accustomed to.

PROS:

(+) German Equatorial mount provides decent tracking of objects in sky
(+) Tripod mount is not too bad for the price range.
(+) Decent optics, only one useable Eye piece (20mm)
(+) Uses Standard eyepieces (1.25 inch)
(+) Digital Camera Attachment is possible for astrophotography if you buy the right accessories matching your Digital camera.

CONS:
(-) Does not magnify enough for you to see spectacular details one wishes for.
(-) Other than one eyepiece (20mm) all other eyepieces' are not useable making it difficult to use them in the telescope for better view of the celestial objects.
(-) When the Tripod is extended all the way out, it shakes and makes it unusable.

Having said, this is a decent Telescope for watching at the moon, but I could not see any better than what is visible to naked eye when it comes to other planets, I am not sure why the magnification is not good enough to see more details when it comes to planets.

If you can find this telescope for less than $80 dollars it is well worth it for occasional sky watching, never for any serious astronomy or astrophotography use.

don't even think of buying this
A piece of real crap. Never even think of buying this.

After lot of difficulties, I could finally point it to the moon. I only saw white light through its eye-piece as much as I can see with my naked eyes!!! The eye piece is so small, it seems as if I poked a hole on a piece of paper and watched a portion of the moon through the paper. And I paid so much money to see that crap?

Then I focussed on a distant star. It just appeared as it would appear through a 4x cheap binocular.

Believe me, don't buy a telescope if you live in a city and have enough "noise" from other light sources. If you live in a country side, you'd better buy a better telescope and not this crap.

I finally sold it on ebay and bought a good pair of Nikon binocular. The moon looks awesome through the Nikon binoculars. Read my other review on Nikon binoculars.

Solid, if unspectacular, performance
I bought the C70 to serve as a travel telescope for observing the moon and planets. Maksutov-Cassegrain optics, 70mm objective, 700mm focal length (f/10), 2lbs (0.9kg), length 11 in with eyepiece.

PROS
1. Light and small. I have flown with the C70, tripod, laptop, power cord, digital camera, and several paperbacks in a small carry-on backpack.
2. Resolution is good. Saturn was clearly identifiable even at 25x and with the rings almost edge-on. Under clear skies the moon is sharp down to the limit of what my eye can resolve. Atmospheric turbulence has been more limiting than the optics.
3. No false color, no image shift during focusing, and no tube currents, even taking the scope outside to observe immediately in freezing temperatures.
4. Included zoom eyepiece has good eye relief. I wear glasses and have no problem seeing the entire field. Also, unlike most inexpensive spotting scopes, the C70 includes an adapter to use standard 1.25" astronomical eyepieces.
6. Fitting a workable finder takes less than a minute and costs literally nothing. I made a sight tube from an old ink pen held on by two rubber bands, and the grooves on the rubber armor hold it correctly aligned. I have never spent more than a few seconds getting anything into the field of view.
7. Did I mention the rubber armor? It is also water resistant, which is worse than many high-end spotters (waterproof) but better than most high-end astro scopes (no weatherproofing). Put it in the padded soft-case, toss it in a backpack or sling it over a shoulder (strap included) and you're ready to go. The soft case can be zipped open and left on the scope for use in the cold or damp, which is a nice touch.
8. A screw-on metal cap covers the entire eyepiece. The plastic cap for the objective is securely snug but not too tight, and won't scratch the optics.
9. Despite being mostly plastic, the included tripod is surprisingly sturdy. It vibrates when bumped, but the vibrations die out in 2-3 seconds. Happily, it is no less sturdy with the center column extended. Folds to less than a foot long and weighs almost nothing; would be a good tabletop tripod for small cameras, too.

CONS
1. Views are fairly dim, especially at high powers. It's a 70mm scope and a Mak, so this is basically unavoidable. That doesn't really matter for the moon and planets, which are still plenty bright. But it's not good for nebulae and galaxies (no surprises there).
2. The focuser has some slop. Oddly, it is better if I press down while focusing, but that makes the image shake, which makes focusing more difficult. Focuser slop probably varies a lot, so other C70s may be a lot better (and some may be even worse).
3. No finder is included, and at f/10 you will want something. Most small scopes either come with no finder, a sight tube, or a finder so tiny as to be useless, so this weakness is not particular to the C70. It is also easily remedied, as described above.
4. Included tripod has elevation limits: 45 degrees if the scope is mounted as shown, 60 degrees if you turn it around. You can exceed this by moving one leg inward and tilting the tripod, although this makes the tripod less stable.
5. If you stick with the included tripod, you have to get the scope up off the ground. To me, that's not much of a liability, for two reasons. First, most small scopes come with a table-top tripod or none at all, so out of the box the C70 is equipped as well or better. Second, I would rather set the scope on something than tote around a full-size tripod (your mileage may vary). That the included tripod is actually functional, fairly sturdy, and has working slow-motion controls is entirely positive.

The big pros are the small size and light weight. The big cons are the narrow field of view and the dimming at high power. The C70 can't compete with bigger scopes in terms of image quality (the Ultima 80 described in another review has a third more light-gathering ability [pi*40^2 vs pi*35^2], is 50% longer, weighs _twice_ as much, costs almost twice as much, and does not include a tripod). On the other hand, the C70 is so small and light that you can take it lots of places that you couldn't or wouldn't normally take a telescope, so you will see a lot that you wouldn't otherwise. Here's an example: one night over the holidays I set up the C70 on the hood of my parents' car and showed the whole family a young crescent moon. Everyone was mesmerized by the craters. My father had never seen the Great Nebula in Orion so we had a look, and then checked out a binary star. There's a half hour of enjoying the universe together that we wouldn't have had without a telescope. That's what travel telescopes are for, that's why I got this particular scope, and I'm glad I did.

CONCLUSION
Before you buy any optical equipment, decide what you want to observe and what characteristics are most important. Read everything you can about the models that might meet your needs, and be realistic about the trade-offs inherent in _every_ optical design _regardless_ of cost. Finally, whatever you buy, don't obsess about its quality, for good or ill. Get outside and let it deepen your experience of nature.

Not bad for the money
Optics are "ok" at best (very marginal at 50x or 75x but not bad at 25x). On the positive side, the telescope is small (about the size of a thermos jug) and portable so I can take it with me whereas many telescopes are just too big or need too much tripod. Basically, at $94 for the telescope and tripod, I'm happy.

Celestron C70 Mini Mak vs Ultima 80
I wanted to like this scope but couldn't (it's going back).

The Good: compact for the power, can hold cradled in hands with arms braced on chest at 25x fairly steadily, includes adapter for 1.25" standard eyepieces, light enough to use on fairly small tripods (one is included) or window mounts, includes good lense covers on both ends and a pretty nice carrying case.

The Bad: mediocre optical performance, hard to focus, not weatherproof (though it's rubber coated). Small field of view and less than optimum eye relief.

Optical performance is the killer. I had this scope shipped to my son in the high desert of southern WY, where I was headed for a visit. I had a new Celestron Ultima 80 (straight eyepiece) along intended as a gift for his birthday - so a comparison was inevitable.

He had previewed the C70 before I arrived and was impressed. My initial look through it was very disappointing. Then I realized that most of the problem was heat mirage combined with the always present WY wind. But looking up at ridges above most of the mirage convinced me that there were other issues. Next morning, before the mirage and wind got going I compared 3 scopes under identical conditions.

I looked at a house on the ridge above town, particularly a car parked next to it. The distance was 640 yards (measured with a laser range-finder). Reading the license plate was a great test - plus the car started in shade and then was in sun by the end of the test.

C70: noticably dimmer in the shadows than the Ultima 80 (not too surpising, but more than I'd expected). The exit pupil of the Ultima 80 at max power is over 1mm (80/60), while the C70 is under 1mm (70/75), so at max power the C70 looks comparitively even worse on that score. The license plate was NOT QUITE readible, even with a bit of guesswork. Then I realized why the C70 seemed hard to focus. The focus knob has noticable backlash. I focus by going past sharpest focus, then back, rocking across the best image a couple of times before settling on it. But, there was noticable movement back before the focus started shifting back, this lag made finding the optimum focus less instinctive. Eye relief was adaquet for use with glasses, but not great, with a tendency to vignetting. The vignetting was odd, with a tendency to lose the center, perhaps due to the center obstruction created by the front mirror.

Ultima 80: brighter as I mention above. The license plate was clearly readable, the VW logo on the car was clear (but was only an indistinct round smudge, barely identifiable through the C70). Occasionally, whether due to atmospheric conditions or (more likely) my old eyes clearing a bit - the image snapped into a crispness that was NEVER seen with the C70. This was at maximum power (60x), and since it looked good there, I didn't spend much time at lower power, where inexpensive zoom eyepeices often perform better. Although the focus knob is smaller, focus was easier, with no noticable backlash. Eye relief was a slightly better than the C70's, partially explaining why use with glasses was noticably more pleasant. Just as the specs indicate, the Ultima 80 has a noticably wider field of view (at the same zoom power).

And Finally - the Tourist-6: a 15+ year old Russian 20-30x 50mm folded refractor. I'd seen (and looked through) several of these years ago, all poor in finish and build quality, and obviously not well quality controlled. Mine is the ugliest I've seen, but optically the best, so there is nothing wrong with the design or the fundimentals of the optics, but modern Russian export optics are much better finished and assembled. The homely little 50mm spotter was marginally better than the 70mm C70! The license plate was marginally readable! Focus was easy. Use with glasses difficult (fortunately I have very little astigmatism in my right eye so that's OK). The C70 was slightly outperformed by the humble old optic it was meant to replace.

My son (age 30, with eyes to match) took a brief look through the C70 and Ultima 80 at the same house and car license plate. He saw an even bigger advantage in favor of the Ultima 80 than I did, and was glad the the Ultima was his and the C70 mine!

I spent some time with the C70 trying lower powers, and though it sharpened a bit, it never improved enough to surpass the little Tourist-6. The weak link in inexpensive spotting scopes is often the zoom eyepiece. I've read another informal C70 review online where they tried some good quality 1.25" fixed eyepieces on it and experienced quit noticable improvements in the image. So, for those who have some quality eyepieces in the 20mm or 30mm range, the C70 might be more usable. Notice though that the supplied eyepeice cover attaches on the same theads that the supplied 1.25" eyepeice adapter uses, and that it holds an eyepiece in with a typical small thumb-screw as is used on astronomical telescopes and you see that this set-up makes the C70 less handy as a truely portable spotting scope. (Avoiding dropping an eyepeice, protecting the eyepiece and the interior of the scope from dust and moisture, etc, becomes a tedious juggle every time the scope is taken out and put away.)

Like I said, its going back. But don't worry Celestron - Amazon will have my order for an Ultima 80 (A friend bought one a couple of years ago and they were making them good then too), or a C90 spotter (well reviewed but with its own tradeoffs) - as soon as I make up my mind between them.

Great product, faulty product description
T-adapters can turn your telescope into an amazing telephoto lens and this one will work with any that have a 1.25" visual back. This piece has a 1.25" inserting slip connector which replaces the Star Diagonal on your telescope and the title given by Celestron is entirely misleading, it refers to a generic measurement of an inch (actually 1.25"). The faulty description continues in the product description: it WILL NOT FIT .96" visual backed telescopes such as the Celestron C90, or the Nexstar 4GT. In that case you'll need this part Celestron 93635-A T-Adapter for NexStar 4GT Those telescopes have a .96" visual back and the T-adapter has a female ring which screws over the visual back.

In either case you still need a T-Ring to connect to your camera, be careful there too as there are now ones for 58mm digital cameras that are larger than the older 35mm.

Getting Amazon to change these descriptions is difficult so hopefully this review can correct it.

Universal T-Adapter
I bought this for use with my Celestron 130 SLT telescope, but did not consider that my camara is a Kodak P-850 Digital SLR, which requires a 52mm barrel adapter, as well as a 52mm T-adapter!

My own fault, due to my ignorance.

But, I have ordered the required adapters and will post back later, after I get a chance to try everything out. Product is solid, and as described.

Works with telescope adjustment
This product screws into the T-ring and hooks to my Canon Rebel-XTI as expected. The product attaches to my telescope as expected. Unforunately, I could not focus as is. The telescope required adjusting the mirror position to perfect the focus. So I learned something. Connected to a Tasco Luminova telescope.

Very Good Refractor For The Money
This telescope allowed me to look at Venus that enlarged it to the size of the moon with an 11mm 82 degree Orion eyepiece! I'm sorry that the other reviewers didn't find this telecope amazing, but I did. Maybe they are more experienced than me, but I feel I made the right decision buying this telescope. This is my second telescope I have owned. My first one was a cheap Konus, that got me started. I tried to do my homework before buying this telescope. Here are the features I think I paid this kind of money for: 1) Wide field of view. Because the scope is short tubed, it sees a wider field of view than a longer tube refractor. 2) Huge 102mm lens. I would like to someday own the Celestron 150mm longer tube refractor, but it would serve a different purpose. 3) GOTO computer. It still requires effort on my part, but it sure is a cool feature. I don't expect it to work like a government or NASA product, it is a home telescope, and it is as good as it gets. Buy it without regret and unlock the views of the solar system.

Great scope for the money
The Celestron Nexstar 102 SLT is a nice scope for the money. The mount is stable and well damped, and the finder scope works very well. I have no problems at all aiming the scope manually at the stars or planets I want to look at. The battery life is very good as well. I've accidently left the red-dot on, not finding it on until the next day and it is still going strong. A very easy scope to use, though I would recommend an additional 3 or 4mm eyepiece and a moon filter to really enjoy the scope to a greater degree. Then of course the computerized "Go To" capabilities of the scope increases the fun by a tremendous amount. It works very well once the scope is aligned and aligning is a snap. A lot of fun. Highly recommended!

My Experience with this scope Messier Marathon March2007
I was happy with the Deep Space objects I was able to see with the Celestron StarSeeker 114mm. I was able to see 85 % of the list. The more experiencenced observers, did see most of the other dimmly lit objects with this scope.
The handset made finding anything overhead easy, the 2 eye pieces are ok for starters and the tripod was sturdy and did not move much in the light wind.
Others at the star party told me, they were very impressed with the performance of my scope and "everyone" said, a better eyepiece would be their only improvment with this entry level telescope. Saturn and Jupiter are very noticeable as is. The moon will surprise you.

What you get for the price, is a great beginners telescope !

I bought this as a package with the Celestron microscope. I tried them. Poor quality both with fine focus and with capturing pictures.

Frustrated
Please note, this item does not include a microscope. All you will receive is an Imager...something that digitizes the image from YOUR microscope.

We found this out after waiting 5 months for the item. Silly us for waiting so long, and then to find it wasn't what we expected.

Too many deficiencies to even mention. Too small, poor mount, will vibrate excessively, and very frustrating to use. It will turn you off to astromony, not on.

Great product!
I'm just a beginner with my telescope, so I don't know of a lot of the little things that experts say about this product. All I know it is great looking at the moon and planets with what amounts to a very powerful set of binoculars! I also love the soft rubbery feeling of the housing.

Excellent product
I am a novice nightsky watcher, I found that one eyepeaces strained my eyes very quickly, limiting the extended of my viewing sesions. I than order the Binocular Viewer and immidiatly felt the relief in my eyes especially since the eyepeaces can be adjusted to different widths. I highly recomended.
